about

"The Ocean" is a part instrumental, part vocal album featuring some of the many talented musical friends I've made living here in Catskill, NY.

The idea for the record has been swimming around in my head for a little while. "Moon Jellies” was the first piece that came to me, almost two years ago, after reading the book “Spineless” by Juli Berwald about her career studying jellyfish. I started to reflect on my time spent on the Oregon coast while growing up, and my many adventures living and traveling along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts since then; and on the powerful role of the ocean as a force of mystery and longing, symbolizing the unknowability of what lies beyond. This is a slim and sparse album, which is a little funny given the massive nature of the subject matter, but rather than attempting to paint a musical landscape I’m reflecting on the archetypal, imaginary ocean that haunts our memories and dreams.

Some unexpected downtime in April and May due to the pandemic gave me the space I needed to finish these songs, and the generosity of my kickstarter backers gave me partial funding to begin recording. Once total production costs have been recouped, all proceeds from sales of this album will go to a collection of nonprofits dedicated to ocean preservation.
